RESEARCH INTERESTS

My current research program focuses on the discovery of novel natural products with potential use as human therapeutic agents or as lead structures for rationale drug design.
Compounds are obtained from oriental traditional herb and marine organisms including marine plants, invertebrates and microorganisms associated with marine habitats using bioassay guided purification.
The structures of new compounds are determined through spectroscopic means with an emphasis on the use of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Specific projects include the development of new isolation techniques for marine microorganisms, the development of new fermentation methods and the study of the taxonomy and inter-relationships of the microorganisms in our collection of 2,000 strains.
Other research interests include the discovery of new biocatalyst from the marine-derived fungus and its application to the synthesis of non-natural bioactive compounds.


The research projects in our laboratory are as follows:
1. Chemical studies on naturally occurring drug material.
2. Structure elucidation of bioactive constituents in natural resources.
3. Exploitation of new fine chemicals including pharmaceuticals in nature: new drug lead from the sea.
4. Synthesis of bioactive compounds using biocatalyst.
5. Biological activity and creation of new drug lead.

- UV-A Protecting assay,: skin care and anti-photoaging.

- Multidrug-resistant assay: antimicrobial activity.





NATURAL PRODUCTS TO DRUGS
Natural products traditionally have played an important role in drug discovery and were the basis of most early medicines
(M. S. Butler, Nat. Prod. Rep. 2005).

In the case of therapeutic areas such as oncology, immunosuppression and metabolic diseases, natural products have played a central role in new drug lead discovery.

In a recent review (D. J. Newman et al., J. Nat. Prod.,2003), natural products were a significant source of these new drugs, especially in the oncological and antihypertensive therapeutic aresa. In addition to providing many new drug leads, natural products and natural product-derived drugs were well represented in the top 35 worldwide selling ethical drugs in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

NEW FINE CHEMICALS, COSMETICS AND DRUGS, FROM THE MARINE NATURAL PRODUCTS

More than 70% of our planet’s surface is covered by oceans and life on Earth has its origin in the sea.
Many marine organisms are soft bodied and have a sedentary life style necessitating chemical means of defence.
Therefore, they have evolved the ability to synthesize toxic compounds or to obtain them from marine microorganisms.
These compounds help them deter predators, keep competitors at bay or paralyze their prey.
The overwhelming biological diversity of marine microbes has so far only been explored to a very limited extent.
This diversity is believed to give rise to an equally high diversity of secondary metabolites synthesized by the marine microfauna and microflora.

Marine natural products released into the water are rapidly diluted and, therefore, need to be highly potent to have any effect.
For this reasosn, and because of the immense biological divesity in the sea as a whole, it is incresaingly recognized that a huge number of natural products and novel chemical entities exist in the oceans, with biological activities that may be useful in the quest for finding drugs with greater efficacy and specificity for the treatment of many huma diseases (B. Haefner, DDT, 2003).
